چکیده

Dexmedetomidine is a new alpha2-agonist that received FDA approval in 1999 for use as a short-term (less than 24 h) sedativeanalgesic in the intensive care unit. The use of alpha2-agonists as anesthetics is not new since many alpha2-agonists are used in veterinary medecine to induce anesthesia. Clonidine, the prototype of alpha2agonists, has been synthesized in early 1970’s for its use as nasal decongestant and antihypertensive drug. Clonidine is widely used as an adjunct to anesthesia and pain medicine; however, it has been little used as sedative.

Dexmedetomidine-induced neuroprotection: is it translational?

Dexmedetomidine is often used in anesthesia and critical care medicine practice to sedate patients. Its neuroprotective effects have been shown in various ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injury models of animals. Randomized clinical trials have indicated that dexmedetomidine can improve outcome of patients under intensive care. Clinical trials are needed to determine whether dexmedetomidine can ...

Dexmedetomidine in perioperative acute pain management: a non-opioid adjuvant analgesic

Many nociceptive, inflammatory, and neuropathic pathways contribute to perioperative pain. Although opioids have long been a mainstay for perioperative analgesia, other non-opioid therapies, and dexmedetomidine, in particular, have been increasingly used as part of a multimodal analgesic regimen to provide improved pain control while minimizing opioid-related side effects. This article reviews ...

BACKGROUND Dexmedetomidine, a highly selective α2-adrenoceptor agonist, has been investigated for anti-shivering effects in some trials. This current meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine as a neuraxial adjuvant in preventing perioperative shivering. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis was registered in PROSPERO [www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO]...
